Too Much Potassium?

How do high Potassium foods effect your body specifically? When either Potassium or Sodium (also known as Sodium Chloride, or Salt) become more depleted than the other, or both levels fall within your body, you become weak, your muscles begin to lose their shape, and your reflexes suffer. Of the two components, Sodium is usually the culprit to be excessive in measure and causes havoc – requiring a doctor to intervene many times. Although, not nearly as common, there are people who are just the opposite, having their Sodium counts be too low, and having too much potassium.

Possible, yes, but not likely in mainstream America, or the Western world. People, who eat a constant diet of only fruit, run the highest risk of having too much potassium in their system.

Point of interest: too much potassium in one’s body may lead to excessive vomiting because the body then would have trouble digesting foods and properly extracting its nutrients. Too much salt, or Sodium in your body can cause the same result, which is why those desperate for something to drink, but lost at sea, would die if they drank the sea water. Such a strong dose of salt, in that extreme case, would be toxic.

Americans in general, suffer more often from potassium deficiency. That’s both good news and bad news. Bad news, because, we live in a society that self diagnoses, often assuming remedy rather than educating themselves on the proper ways to prevent or defeat a problem. In this particular case, one simply cannot properly "diagnose" have low potassium counts, or too much potassium, can be solved by diet alone.
